The following criteria must be met by an applicant to qualify for interview. Places will be awarded on tiers one and two of the programme based on interview scoring and references.
- Elite Athlete Programme (EAP) membership is available to Queen’s University Belfast full-time or part-time students. Students who are on a Leave of Absence (LOA) will not be eligible for the programme. Placement or Erasmus students are eligible for an agreed support package subject to maintaining performance standards and Queen’s representation.
- Elite Athlete membership is for a one-year period subject to ongoing reviews.
- An Elite Athlete member who has a personal coach must share these conditions with the coach and have them countersign them.
- All EAP students are subject to an athletic and medical assessment from Queen’s Sport at the start of each year. The date generated will be shared with the athlete’s head coach.
General Sporting Standards
To meet the criteria for consideration for eligibility, athletes must broadly meet the following criteria:
- Have a proven record at Junior or Senior International level, or
- Have participated at Olympic Games, World, European or Commonwealth Championships
- Meet the academic standards for entry to Queen’s
- Be progressing on an international pathway through an NGB, and
- Be highly ranked within their chosen sport, and
- Have a proven record of success, and
- Meet specific test scores relevant to their sport.
The panel will make decisions on which tier is applicable to each athlete based on performances measurable in the criteria laid out.
Hockey specific standards
Tier 2
- Ireland or National (Within Top 16 in World Rankings) U21 Squad with recognised potential
- Either provincial representative experience at Junior or Senior level or proven record at School’s Cup level alongside exceptional developmental potential, verifiable by Queen’s Sport performance staff
Criteria to be met in addition to those listed in tier 2.
Tier 1
- International Senior Hockey selection (nation ranked within Top 16 in World Rankings)
Rowing specific standards

Eligibility for consideration for a place on the Elite Athlete Programme, tier 2, is determined as follows:

Water performances for Elite Applications will be either:
- Won at an Irish Senior Championship.
- Won Gold medal at Championship event at BUCS Regatta.
- Won a medal at European University Championships (EUSA)
- Medal at FISU University Championships
- An exceptional school leaver with a performance record at national level may be
considered, based on appropriate references
Tier 1
Additional criteria are applied for athletes to merit consideration for tier one:
- Selection on a NGB team for Olympic Regatta or World Senior Championships or European Senior Championships or World Cup Regatta at senior level.
- Achieve an “A final” on an NGB team for World u23 Championships
- An exceptional school leaver with a performance record at international level may be considered, based on appropriate references
Note that for 2020/21 intake, criteria may be considered by the panel as “achieved” based on a case for reasonably expected performance presented by the athlete, coaches and NGBs.
GAA specific Standards
Tier 2
Gaelic Football
- All Ireland or Provincial Medallist as a starter at U20 or Senior level, or
- Starter on senior championship team (2+ games) – divisions 1, 2 or 3, or
- Top 3 Ranked player within your County based on appropriate references, or
- Top 5 provincial players at School level based on appropriate references
Ladies Gaelic Football
- All Ireland Medallist as a starter at Senior Level, or
- Top 3 ranked player in your province, based on appropriate references
- Top 3 Ranked at School level, based on appropriate references
Hurling
- Liam McCarthy Quarter-finalist and Individual Merit Award e.g. Senior All-Star nomination
- Starter on Division 1 National league or Sam Maguire winning team, or
- Senior International Rules player, or
- Individual merit award e.g. Senior All-Star Nominee or Ulster Team of the Year.
Camogie
- All Ireland Senior Quarter-finalist and Individual Merit Award e.g. Senior All-Star nomination
Tier 1
Gaelic Football
Ladies Gaelic Football
- Individual merit award – Senior All-Star
- All Ireland Senior (Liam McCarthy) medallist as a starter, or
- Senior All Star award
Hurling
Camogie
- All Ireland Senior medallist as a starter
Rugby Specific Standards
Tier 2
Men’s
- Age grade representation at International level, or
- Potential to play Professional Rugby, or
- A school leaver of outstanding potential based on references and steering group assessment
And:
- Will attain and hold a starting position during AIL league for QUB 1stXV
Women’s
- Selection on senior international Squad
- AIL standard and proven experience
