Queen's Student Olympians Paris 2024

A record number of Queen's Students and Graduates will compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics...

Queen’s University Belfast is proud to announce that an unprecedented number of students and graduates will compete in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, showcasing the university's commitment to both academic and athletic excellence.

Three current Queen's students, Erin Creighton, Nathan Timoney, and Rachel McCann, will be among the athletes representing Ireland. Erin, an Aerospace Engineering student, will compete in women's track cycling. Rachel, a recent Pharmaceutical Sciences graduate, will join the Irish 400-metre relay team. Nathan, a Business Management student, is part of the Rowing Ireland team.

Rachel McCann, who received the Individual Sports Achievement Award at Queen’s annual Blues Sporting Awards in June, attributed her success to the substantial support from Queen’s Sport. She shared, “Queen’s Sport has been instrumental in enabling me to compete at a high level while completing my final year. Their flexibility and support, such as adjusting deadlines and exam dates, allowed me to focus on both my academic and athletic goals. Attending the Olympics is a dream come true, and I am immensely grateful to Queen’s for their unwavering support.”

In addition to the current students, eight Queen’s graduates will also be competing in Paris. These include Philip Doyle, Rebecca Edwards, and Ross Corrigan in Rowing, Sean Murray, Michael Robson, Peter Brown and Johnny McKee in Hockey, and Ashleigh Orchard in the Ireland Rugby Sevens Squad. Philip Doyle, Rebecca Edwards, and Michael Robson are making their second Olympic appearances, having competed in Tokyo 2020 and Rio 2016 respectively.

Many of these athletes have benefited from the Queen’s Elite Athlete Programme, which provides scholarships to talented student-athletes. This programme offers access to top-tier facilities, expert coaching, financial assistance, academic flexibility, and mentorship, helping athletes excel in both their sport and studies.

We extend our best wishes to all our athletes as they compete in Paris. Their dedication and hard work have led them to this incredible achievement, and we are immensely proud of them.
